Edwin Rahardjo

E.R ( Jakarta, Indonesia, July 1st 1953)

Since the early 80’s, I have been fascinated with mechanical toys. I always wondered how the mechanical work inside the toys. As I’m always interested with many different things, I took different majors; Architecture, Interior Design and Photography. I studied in London, Holland and
different cities in USA. In 1980, I started working as a professional photographer.

Due to my passion in mechanics, I started making my own toys in 1995. My background and knowledge in different areas had contributed positively during the process.

My relation with many artists, my passion of mechanical, and my eagerness to create something and my fascination of nature had made me a kinetic artist.

In 2011, I created kinetic show at Grand Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia. My work that was showcased, “Floating Fleet”, was a resemblance of a flock of birds fluttering as a family. Their movements are harmonious with the music, giving the impression of tenderness and harmony. A wide range of experiments on various components, media, materials, software, hard teamwork, as well as substantial time were required to produce a composition of harmonious, smooth and soft motion in the work. The motion sensation of “Floating Fleet” provides a reflection of how art, science and technology can be combined in a unity.

My latest work was inspired by fluid moment of squid swimming in the ocean; an integration of my knowledge of mechanical and lighting from photography and interior design. Therefore, it was called “Light Rhythm”.

Kinetic sculpture is interesting to me as they are not only three dimensional, but it comes a light with many surprises.
