Szymon Klimek

Szymon Klimek is an engineer and artist from Poland who is currently building ornate mechanical devices powered by natural or artificial light. The tiny machines are placed inside glass goblets for protection due to their small size and delicacy.

The goblets also lend a bit of elegance to the display. The spherical shape of the goblet allows viewers to see the work from any angle. The goblets do not exceed a height of 27 cm and a diameter of 11 cm.

The engines are made from thin sheet brass and bronze and carefully hand assembled. Szymon is fascinated with the period of industrial development when brass machines were at the height of their popularity. His first works were static sculptures, but since 2008 he has been including moving parts that are powered by silicon panels placed inside the goblet. No batteries are needed to run them—only light.

Two of his works are on permanent exhibit at the Joe Martin Foundation Museum of Miniature Engineering Craftsmanship in Vista, California, USA. The foundation has honored Mr. Klimek with an award for lifetime achievement in miniature craftsmanship. His work was also featured at ‘JUBINALE 2010 in Krakow, Poland.

OXYGEN: Artist Membership Programme

The above artist has enrolled in Kinetica Museum's artist member programme

Kinetica's membership scheme was launched in November 2010, and aims to provide Kinetica with the opportunity to extend our artist network whilst fostering emerging talent. This membership level provides another access point for practitioners to show work at our annual art fair, where over forty exhibitors take up stands in order to show and sell their work. Oxygen members are entitled to a profile on our Kinetica Museum website, and gain access to Kinetica's interim exhibitions as well as our networks. The feature exhibition at the 2013 fair will be comprised of artworks created by our artist members. The feature exhibition is curated by Kinetica Museum's Artistic Director Dianne Harris, and the final selectins will be announced in Autumn 2012. For more information on our artist membership scheme, please visit the MEMBERSHIP section of this website.
