16th - 30th March 2007
Kinetica Museum, Spitalfields Market, London, UK

In March 2007 Kinetica’s Spitalfields Museum was taken over by disparate mechanical forms, a cacophony of hybrid machines during the course of our exhibition of Jim Bond and Ray Lee's large scale sonic installations and contraptions, which also featured work by Kinetica artist Nik Ramage.

Lee, in Circles of Ether took over the upper gallery, creating a spatial composition for an ensemble of his kinetic sound machines. This elaborate system of electro-mechanical sound generators, spinning oscillators, and noise machines created a complex, multi-layered sound composition, and compelling visual spectacle. Bond’s Sound Bites and the Untamed Eye transformed the lower gallery into a sensory environment of sound and vision, combining organic forms and machine aesthetics. The dialogue and interplay within the works and complex exploration of electro-accoustic mechanical devices both connected and juxtaposed Lee and Bond’s work. The implication of kinetic art upon our sensory experience, and the purpose of the machine was further explored in Nik Ramage’s Contraptions of Distinction, large hybrid, absurd creations shown alongside these sonorous kinetic installations.
