Musion Academy and the MAMAs at Kinetica Art Fair 2010

  4/2/2010 - 7/2/2010

With the support of Musion Systems, Kinetica Art Fair 2010 was able to host its series of performances and talks both with and alongside the holographic Musion projection system.

Musion specializes in a high definition 3D holographic video projection system allowing a spectacular 3-dimensional moving life-size hologram to appear within a stage setting using Peppers Ghost technology. Musion has worked with Madonna, Lewis Hamilton, Girls Aloud and HRH the Prince of Wales amongst many others. Musion has always been keen to foster relationships with academia and the general public. This interest has given birth to The Musion Academy - an institutionalized forum for students, artists and people from the creative industries to create holographic projection. It allows artists to produce their own innovative artwork by providing them with the necessary technical framework and logistics. In this sense, it is a unique collaboration between the creative art world and the skills involved in technology.

Musion Academy Workshops

The Musion Academy hold weekly, in-depth workshops, with previous guest lecturers including the BBC, Green Hippo, members of the Computer and Art Society and Kinetica Art Fair. Everyone who is interested in this technology is invited to partake in the Musion Academy - the forum is designed to demystify the technology and to enable all attendees to explore their own unique, creative potential.

The Musion Academy Media Awards - MAMAs - is a yearly award ceremony presenting the best in holographic projection art. Grand Award Winner of MAMAs 2009 - Stuart Warren Hill, with his winning music and video performance 'Holotronica', performed at Kinetica Art Fair 2010.

MUSION ACADEMY SHOWCASE

The Musion Academy is proud to present a diverse selection of the best artwork from the Academy attendees - both established and emerging artists alike. The showcasing artists include -

EUGENIA EMETS presents 'Manta Ray', a dynamic geometric light and sound sculpture, reflecting upon the transformation of form from 2D to 3D, shifting the point of perception of the audience. (picture on opposite page)

ALEXANDRA UNGER, a visual artist working with painting, sculpture, installation, video and performance, her artwork was inspired by the Mesopotamian origins of belly-dance.

BRENDAN MURPHY, winner of the MAMAs 2009 Narrative Category, presents 'Not I' - an interpretation of a script by Samuel Beckett, featuring a set of dislocated lips suspended in the air, articulating disjointed memories and moments of lucidity from the narrator's life in the third person.

GAYLE BERTON, winner of the Open Source Distance Learning category at the MAMAs 2009, presents performance triggered reel time motion graphics in 'Wii Gesture'.

JAYNE WILTON JASON TINSLEY concern themselves with the subtle rhythms and dynamics of human function and interaction in the 'Combat' piece.

RACHEL GARRARD, winner of the MAMAs 2009 Performance category with 'Circuition', where artist becomes the artwork, the spectator becomes an interactive audience and the empty space is given the illusion of solidity.

NAHEET RAZA, work 'Ravel' deals with the tension between 'knowing' and 'unknowing', apparent stability and underlying change, and the elusive, often ambiguous nature of reality. 'Ravel' was an animation produced in collaboration with graphic artist Carl Fairweather as part of Naheed's recent residency in the Maths Department at UCL

MADI BOYD MAT HOURTEILLAN, 'MADink' is a performance based audio visual work which hovers between being a painting, a sculpture and moving image.

BIRGITTA HOSEA, an artist who combines motion graphics and animation with performance, presents 'White Lines'. This piece was conceived of as a moving painting in three-dimensions, in which the artist draws herself into existence from out of the darkness.

KINGA MALISZ, 'Venus' - fashion designer Malisz unites vision and sound, in an innovative interpretation of the goddess.
