| Addressing The Unexpected "Fascinated by the evolution of the wearable artefact beyond identity, enhancement and protection, my research strives to examine clothing as an instrument for creative social encounters, through pro-active assembly, physical exploration of textiles and creative movement of intrepid pioneers. A hands-on choreography of fashion, technology and performance, the work employs both manual and electronic devices designed to unleash curiosity in the wearer and those around them. Combinations of tailoring, upholstery, origami, mechanics, sensors, actuators and soft circuitry are used to create instinctual interfaces that explore the wearer's desire to engage. Never viewed solely on the body, each piece is hidden in portable boxes or merged with the city landscape. They must be exposed, unpacked, assembled and then mastered. To become a virtuoso of these wearable devices we must be social, inquisitive, playful and intrepid. Investigating digital fabrication methods, I use the laser cutter and 3d printers to create reconfigurable body-centric landscapes. Blending soft malleable textiles with robust industrial materials more associated with architecture and or furniture design, I aim to create ambiguous structures that are both foreign and familiar to their inquisitors. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration, I connect with musicians, dancers, architects and scientists. Diving beyond my own pool of expertise allows me to grow both conceptually and practically through the sharing and harvesting of new skills, knowledge and methods.
