Ivan Black - Ellipsoid

Ivan Black
Ellipsoid, 2010
Materials: steel, aluminium
Dimensions: 120cm diameter
Edition: Unique

Ivan Black uses the repetition of simple forms to build complex kinetic structures. The introduction of energy, usually by the viewer, creates travelling waves which spiral through the structures, causing shifts in alignment of the component parts. “Ellipsoid” is a kinetic sculpture based on the form of an oblate spheroid. The chain mechanism from which the piece is constructed allows it to twist and untwist when in motion through the interplay of gravity, inertia and potential energy. The piece can be set in motion by rotating the handle at the base of the sculpture.
